With the situation so fouled up in Cairo, Egypt, these days I tried to reach former Georgia tennis star Hisham Hemeda at his home there, hoping that he and his family were safe.

But he was not there. I finally located him in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which is on the Persian Gulf east of Saudi Arabia.
Hisham and his family (wife, Dina Hamme, and daughter, Tamara, 3) are safe, but Hisham had to abandon his highly successful business (confectioner, chocolates).
"Things are not right in Cairo," he said. "We are supposed to be a democracy, but we have a dictatorship. We have 'fixed' elections run by Hosni Mubarak, now 82 years old, and his son will succeed him. He has been our president the past 30 years.
"Most of our people must live on a dollar per day. We used to have a good tourism business with the Suez Canal and the pyramids are very popular."
